do realtors ever assist in home trades?

Yes, but they do get paid for their efforts. One of the most important things to remember in a trade is that you are trading equity not sales price. If you have a 200K home that you owe $100,000 on and want to trade for a $300K home that is paid for, you need to swap your home plus the $200 difference and you would add your realtors commission on to that figure that you need to finance. Hope this helps. I have assisted in many trades but always use an attorney to help with the documents.
