Good question. I've lived in Santa Fe now over 20 years. We have never had a forest fire near the town. The worst that it gets is heavy smoke. That's the worst. This summer we had an early fire season and the smoke was pretty intense. The rains came, though, in late June and we had an incredibly beautiful and moist summer.

Mark,
The Santa Fe Fire Department and your insurance company would be a good resource for any future projected information about forest fires in Santa Fe.

In my 20 years here, there has never been a forest fire within the city limits. At the same time, if you do a google earth search, you will see that Santa Fe is bordered by the Santa Fe National Forest to the north and east. There have been fires in the forests.

Every community has weather issues. Santa Fe is a very fire wise community with a positive history of over 400 years. If you visit the Santa Fe NM web site at santafenm.gov, there you will find our community action plan and resources. I hope this is helpful to you in your decision to relocate here.

Hi Mark,

There are fires, but none have come close to the heart of the city.

Amazing how you can put a spin on massive forest fires to make them seem like no big deal. Dream on. The place is a friggin tinder box. Yeah it rains in the summer, but it also looked like Dante's inferno for a few weeks this past summer.
Who are you kidding?. If you are going to build or buy a home there make sure it is made out of concrete or adobe and has a moat around it. Get a metal roof. And learn about gardening with rocks.
