Hi Brian,

Per Proposition 13 which passed in 1978 the property tax rate throughout the state of California is set at 1%. Cities and districts are allowed to add additional property taxes with voter approval. Maybe for the schools or in the case of Sausalito the new fire and police departments. Prior to making an offer the tax rate will be disclosed to you in the disclosure package.

Generally speaking while searching for property whether in Sausalito or elsewhere it is safe to estimate 1.25% of the purchase price as your first annual tax bill. Then of course the city will reassess the value of your home up to 2%.

Brian,

You can count on about 1.27% of the sale price for property taxes. I live in Sausalito and this is the effective rate I will have to pay this year.

I hope this helps.

Hi Brian, the basic property tax for all of California is 1%; however, there's more to finding out the TOTAL tax, which you can read in detail here:
