Why would the broker request my W2?

Asked by Slovaki, 11372 Thu Jul 30, 2009

My broker said that the owner already took an offer but we still have a chance. He asked for a good faith
check and a copy of my 2008 W2. Does this sound cool to you?

Hi Slovaki. Did you actually make a written offer? Have you been pre-approved by a lender? Do you have a current credit check with a FICO score and a financial statement showing assets and liabilities? A lot of questions come to mind.

It seems to me your broker asked for a check for a binder and the W-2 to show income for last year. This is hardly a good approach especially if another offer has been accepted.

No, it doesn't sound cool at all.

You really should have a mortgage pre-approval on hand.

Yes, that's normal but probably a waste of time if the owner already took an offer. Usually the broker would send you to a mortgage professional who will ask for the W2. Good luck.
