Why would it take the IRS 14 to 16 weeks to refund this tax credit?

I purchased 213 Addison Lane, Perry GA on 9/11/09 and filed an amended tax return on 9/14/09 for First Time Homeowner Tax Credit. Someone please share their experience with filing for the tax credit.

We sold four homes this year that qualified for the tax credit, Pat. Three of the sales got their refunds within 4-6 weeks and the other in about 8 weeks. One of those was done with an amended return around the end of June, also receiving a check back in that time frame. You may consider checking with the IRS today to ensure they actually received your amended return and form 5405. I provided a link that may prove helpful. Good Luck!

Hello Pat:

Unfortunately, the wheels of the Federal Goverment grind slowly. It is normal and ordinary for the IRS to take between 10-12 weeks just to process (input the information) into their computer system, and then another 2-4 weeks to send out refunds. The process is incredibly complicated and there are quite a few "hands" that touch the return before a credit it authorized. If the tax return is filed during the "peak" of the season (between February and May), the processing time can increase to 18 weeks.

Refunds can be processed slightly faster using a "fast tax" or "electronic" filing system through services such as H&R Block. By filing electronically, the IRS does not have to manually input the numbers from the returns.

Hope this helps!

Sincerely,
