Las Virgenes Unified serving the Calabasas Agoura and Westlake areas -- but if your child has special needs Los Angeles Unified has the best resources and are the most reasonable to deal with.

That's going to depend on what you consider to be Los Angeles or rather from what point you're starting from..
LA is a city/metro/county area of hundreds if not 1000's of square miles.
An hours drive from any point still covers an enormous geographical area and not all areas have equally good schools even if they are in the same school district.
I have twins who graduated from public high school in 2010. From kindergarten to HS graduation they attended schools in two different school districts that were vastly different in their resources and issues.
You need to know at least what general area you're interested in.

Oak Park. Hands down, the very best in the LA area. Better than most prestigious private schools.

Newport Beach and Irvine would be a great place to start looking. I moved to San Diego 30 years ago and my kids went through a great school system but that 's a bit out of your geographical area.

Suggest you consider the South Bay just South of Los Angeles airport. The cities include Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, and Palos Verdes . A link to the school districts can be found at http://schools.GR8Homes.com .Most are "California Distinguished" meaning they are in the top 20% in the state.

Try this link: http://www.greatschools.org

There are a TON of great schools within an hour drive to L.A., start with what your budget is for a home, size, proximity to the beach & other amenities you'd like to have in a home, see where homes / neighborhoods like that are located & then go to the Great Schools website & research from there.

If you'd like to search around in the MLS just like I do, please go to my web link below.

Within an hour drive from central Los Angeles area, La Crescenta, La Canada area have excellent schools. Sherman Oaks and Studio City have great public elementary and private schools. Some of the West LA/Westwood area also have good schools. Hope this helps.
