Dean,
We just completed a study of all the lakes in NC. Depending on so many personal factors like access to the city of Asheville, type of lake (fishing with power boats or just a body of water); understanding how the lakes are drained during the winter months etc. Please email me and I will send you a copy of our study. There really are many choices, however ruling out the ones that don't meet your personal interests is actually pretty straight forward.

Hi Dean. Are you looking for a vacation home or full time living? The Asheville area has some beautiful lake areas. If you are looking for a full time residence where you are driving into town to work or play on a regular basis, there are few lakes that offer this under a 30 minute drive. Sometimes those 30 minute drives are on beautiful country (but windy) roads. Many people have second homes on the lakes here as a 'getaway'. You may also consider Black Mountain, which is 15 minutes easy hwy drive to Asheville, and a thriving restaurant town in its own right. It is about 20 minutes north of Lake lure so offers you the lake fun when you want it. Lake Lure itself has some wonderful homes lake front, and many developments around and about. The town comes alive in the late spring through late fall. If you would like listings in any of these areas email me and I will send you a report. Dean,
I forgot to mention just be a little careful which lake you chose. Lake Lure and Lake James are exceptionally nice and clean unfortunately I cannot say the same for Lake Rhodehiss and some of the lower lying lakes. So go up and take a look yourself. When I lived up there I use to go out on Lake James myself with my children. They have very strict guidelines about building on or near the lake.

Just ask if you want to know about any certain area.

Dean,
In Asheville you can look at the website below for a list of all the rivers, lakes, and other recreational areas. I have lived in Asheville twice and loved it both times. If you find an area you want to explore options on just let me know if you like. If you do not already have an agent in the area I can refer you to a top agent in the area that will specialize in the areas you request. I grew up in northwest NC and have explored most of it myself it is beautiful country. I was actually just married up in Asheville last year at the Richmond Hill Inn. A great Inn to stay in if you are in the area with a stellar restaurant in the main house.

Good luck and happy house hunting.

Dean,
I am trying to convert a study I just finished about ALL lakes within 120 minutes of Asheville. We have clients looking for the best lakes in the Asheville area and they really wanted details so I spend about 10 hours on this study. My PDF converter has been giving us problems. There are few lakes within 30 minutes of Asheville, and actually even the lakes that are "30 minutes" away, really take longer. Lake Lure, Lake Adger, and Lake James are all under one hour to Asheville. Lake Rhodiss between Morganton and Hickory is about 1 hour 20 minutes. These lakes are all nice lakes but they really have their own personality and offer very different lifestyles. I am trying to send you the document via a link, but if you email me at terry@marianschaffer.com I would glad to also send it to you as an attachment. We are specialists in this area and have spent the past decade learning about it and advising our clients on his area. Look forward to hearing from you.

One of the most popular places would be Lake Lure. It is about a 40 minute drive from Asheville and is located in Rutherford county. A lot of the properties on the lake front are in the million plus range. I would be happy to search for properties that are closely aligned with your requirements. If you have additional questions just e-mail me or check my website.
