If you dont mind palmetto bugs in your home, the old houses in St Pete do have previous generation character. Good Luck!
I specialize in downtown St Pete and would be happy to provide you with the recent sales information you want in 33701. I set my clients up with a Listingbook account so you can actually see what is available through the MLS. You just click on a tab called area sales and it shows everything that has sold in the area that matches your criteria. There are some new construction condos and townhomes that are still available that were built in 2007. Those prices have dropped significantly. You can reach me at 727-510-1811.
I would be glad to help you in downtown St Pete. As others have said it is a growing area. This is the time to buy there. When the market turns around it will be very popular. From condos to Old Northeast vintage homes there are a lot of options and a lot to do within walking and biking distance.

Lots of the condos are still being built even though most projects have not been sold. The projects were being built as the market was tanking, I guess we are lucky that they had the funds to complete the projects.
Mary - your best source is to use a real estate agent. Sales are recorded in the Public Records http://www.pcpao.org but they don't provide a search by zip code, so it would be time consuming to search by individual condominium name or by address. According to our MLS, there have been only 6 sales in 33701 so far in 2009 so it should not take long for an agent to give you this information.
Hi Mary. I agree with Kyle that connecting with a Realtor who has access to the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) is the most efficient and accurate way to research recent closings and current listings for condos in St. Petersburg. Many Buyer' Agents do not charge for this valuable service. According to a Local Economic & Market Watch Report for the 4th Quarter of 2008, recently published by Pinellas Realtor Organization, "new housing permits - generally a reliable indicator of future starts - were 48.1% below the rate a year ago. Builders have sharply cut back production." However, as Kyle pointed out, sales of condos in downtown St. Petersburg are doing relatively well. Downtown living in St. Pete is vibrant and attractive as ever!

Closings are public record so they can be found in a number of areas. Such websites as Domania.com, Yahoo and even Trulia over this for you. I suggest for best results that you get with a real estate agent who can search all of the public redcords for 33701 and other areas. An agent can get up-to-date information were the other websites may be a couple of weeks to a month behind.
Also an agetn can see what is pending too. This I think is more important because it gives an idea of what buyers are willing to pay for a property now. When it comes to prices consider what they were from 2002-2003, because they are pretty similar to that price right now. As for new construction, it has probably been hurt the worst in this market, however the Condos in Downtwon St Pete are still doing well when it comes to sales.
If you would like to talk with my team about this and to get more in depth information please call us or email.
