Elvis is correct.
If this property is for sale by private owner, bank, listed in MLS.........there will be a title search and all taxes and liens will be cleared before there is a title transfer. There are exceptions when a new owner could find themselves liable for a tax bill. There are times when a property can transfer without clear title...... For example......with a quit claim deed….or a property bought at a foreclosure auction. In that type of title transfer, the new owner may find liens and liabilities included. Earlier today

Todd, at the closing, your attorney would insist that the all of the taxes that were discoverable, be paid by the seller, and some additional set aside for taxes that would come payable in October (or so), for the period of time the current owner lived there.
So the short answer is: No, the seller is responsible for those taxes. Earlier today

I followed the instructions on a property that I'm interested in and it shows taxes due for 06 and 07. Does that mean that if I bought the property I would owe these taxes? Thanks!

Hi Cheryl-
Nick was way off....here is what you do: Your best bet is http://www.cookcountytreasurer.com/ click on "Online Payments" then type in the Pin Number to the property. To find the pin number you can use this site http://www.cookcountyassessor.com/ and click on "online tools" As you can see I was kidding. Nick's answer was perfect. It is exactly what I do when I'm looking up tax information on a specific property. Thus why nobody else has answered this question. Except me. Hi Nick!
