What to do about cat allergies?

my husband and I are both allergic to cats (sneezing, watery eyes, coughing...but no frank asthma). We like a house, but the current owner has a cat. Even looking at the house made me sneeze. It's half hardwood, half carpet. Would replacing the carpet fix the cat dander problem or is there more we'd have to do? Is that something we could stipulate the owners to do as a condition of sale?? Thanks.

I believe that Diane is referring to "Kilz" which kills odors....not sure about the dander. My thought, as a Realtor and a cat owner, is that replacing carpeting and any drapes, as well as a thorough cleaning, should take care of the problem. Ask your physician....sounds odd but he/she could most likely give you a better idea knowing the severity of your allergy. Good luck!

At a feed store get "skunk out" this usually takes care of it. Or there is something that one can purchase (Lowes or Home Depot) that looks like paint & apply a few coats, let it dry & then replace the carpet. Good luck, I feel for you since I'm allergic to cats myself.

I have exactly the same problem with a house I want to buy (except I have frank asthma) so I hope your question gets answered. I bet we're not the only ones.
