Chatham is comprised of the Boro and the Township. The Boro being closer to town , the Township offering, in most cases, more property. It depends on your needs and preferences. Both desirable!
The school system is comprised of three K-3rd grade schools, one 4th and 5th grade (combined), one Middle School, and one High School. Happy to help!

I've been a Chathamite with homes in both the Boro and Township for 25 plus years. You are equally well served in both; quality of life, schools, shopping, access to transportation links, places of worship, etc.
It truly depends upon where you want to be. If it's more desirable to be in-town near Main Street and a short walk to shopping and the train, or more desirable to have a bit more space and live out-of-town, is all up to you. Taste is personal.
My suggestion would be to tour the area and get a feel for the lay of the land to determine what your hard earned dollar will buy you in each town. There is a difference.
In either case, you cannot go wrong.
Wishing you the best,
I am very glad you are considering Chatham for your next home. To offer a brief answer to your questions: There is not one specific area of Chatham considered more desirable than another in general terms. Also note that all 3 elementary schools are managed and use the exact same curriculum. There is no academic difference to the education offerings amongst the schools.
The more important question is, "what are you family needs". Based on that information I can direct and advice accordingly to find the neighborhood and school best suited to your family.
Please let me know if I can offer my specific details or assistance to your home search.

Just assisted a buyer with a purchase on Colonial Drive. They considered many communities in Morris, Union and Somerset counties and in the end Chatham Boro won out because of the town itself, school and ease of commute.
