What is the best lake in Georgia to buy a house on for recreation purposes?

Asked by Miguel Diaz, Mon Jan 5, 2009

My wife and I live in Atlanta, GA and we are interested in buying a lake house some time this year. It would be for recreation on long weekends or vacation with family and friends. We like boating, fishing, jet skiing, tubing, etc. Can anyone suggest what might be the best lake in GA for these purposes. We want a modest but nice 2-3 bedroom in the $200,000 range.

This lake/golf community of Fairfield Plantation is very well kept secret and worth researching. http://www.fairfieldplantation.com
It;s an easy 40 miles to both Atlanta and Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.
Lake Tara (also known as Treasure Lake ) has extremely clean water and is great for water skiing, fishing, kayaking, swimming etc.
The community also has a golf course, pools, hiking trail, a separate fishing lake and more.
The prices are very reasonable and there is a nice sense of community.
Another good site for searching for lake property is http://www.lakehouse.com
Good luck.

Lake Sinclair is great. Voted "best Lake value in Ga" recently. We love it there!

I know of a great home that was just renovated on lake lanier and is in foreclosure. It's a great deal!

It has lake views and would be a perfect vacation home!

Contact me and we can schedule a time to go look at it!

Hi Miguel,

Do you have a preference for the north or south side of Atlanta? There are many options! :)

Fortunately in north Georgia there are many choices. For that price range your best choices are going to be most likely Lake Weiss, Lake Notteley, Lake Allatoona, Lake Spivey to the south side may actually have your best choices. Lake Lanier, while a great lake is very busy and is hard to find anything in that price range with a dock. Lake Hartwell also on the South Carolina border is a great lake and there are deals up there. If you would like any further assistance I would be more than glad to help. I am a native Georgian and know the lake systems very well. 404-406-0638, http://www.dmceachern.com

At that price you will probably find Lanier the best option, but I don't know how close to the lake you'll be.
