In answer to your question, rents are approximately $1/sq. foot/ month which does not include heat or hot water, parking is limiited. Townhouses or homes which have amenities like central a/c and a remodeled kitchen can be higher. Check out 54 Day Spring in Mount Carmel - built in 1930 it is for sale and requires a bit of tlc, but the neighborhood is excellent. Walk to Hamden town hall, Eli's on whitney, Bread & Chocolate, Whitney Donut.
If you rent a house you are responsible for shoveling and mowing.
