What is meant when a home listed has "geothermal" heating?

Asked by thomas.davis.jr, Rhinebeck, NY Sun Aug 11, 2013

This term typically means tapping into the heat of the inner earth, like steam vents from lava pockets way down deep. It appears the own means something other than this, but what?

This is exactly what the owner means.

Geothermal heating results when the heat that is generated in the earth's interior is brought up to the surface for use. Heating of spaces using geothermal sources can be accomplished in several ways, utilizing different specific heat sources. Geothermal heating can be used in most areas because underground air temperature is stable, usually hovering around 55-degrees Fahrenheit.

Geothermal heating or cooling does not have to have ANYTHING to do with steam. It means the use of an condenser coil (the outdoor unit in a heat pump system) is replaced by using either a long series of pipes under the ground or a coil down a well where the ground water absorbs the heat just as the condenser coil and fan do in the outdoor part of the conventional system. It is "greener" and more efficient than other systems since it uses mother nature to help it work. It works better in some parts of the country and not at all in others.
