I would certainly check out Katy, TX. We have highly rated schools, great new master planned commuties, many new retail and commercial venues and are very convenient to Houston via Interstate 10, Westheimer Parkway, Westpark Tollway and more. Please visit my Katy site to learn more about our area.

The Woodlands. You are only minutes to downtown Houston, but your family can enjoy many parks and trails, great shopping and excellant schools. The new subdivision that just opened up this last year is Creekside. It is a wonderful new area with lots of green space. Are you moving here? If so when?

Sugar Land, TX was ranked one of the safest cities in US.
For schools, HAR has a great school tool: http://www.har.com/school. There you can search by zip code or accountibility rating. To search for crime rate info by zip code or neighborhood, click on the link below. As for convenience, it depends on what you are looking for, like easy access to major streets/highways? Close to restaurants, grocery stores, or shops? Or near by museums and parks? Fri Mar 28 2008, 20:18 Web Reference: http://www.myrealtorjill.com/crime_rate_watch.html

I'm in the same position as you. Convenient is of course relative, but the Katy area has really good schools, and if you find a house closer to I-10 then you'll have easier access to getting around town. Spring Branch has a good school district and closer in to town, but not quite as big a selection in finding a house zoned to a good school & under $400. These are the 2 areas I'm looking in. You can look on the HAR.COM website and find all the information not only about the houses but also the schools. Good luck!

Vero,
Realtors are prohibited from giving you an opinion on whether a neighborhood is high crime, or not. Your best bet is to contact the local police station for statistics about the area in question. Tue Mar 25 2008, 18:27 Web Reference: http://www.OwnGR.com
