I think you were probably looking for a more descriptive response. There are 8 status IDs, of which the public sites typically only allow you to see 2 of, those are A for Active and AC for Active with a Contingent Offer. If you have an agent representing you and they've set you up with an automated search from the MLS, you might also be able to see the other 3 primary statuses, PB for Pending taking Backups, P for Pending, and S for Sold. There are 3 additional status that you will almost never be able to see from a public perspective and those are W for Withdrawn, T for Temporarily off the Market, and X for Expired.
When there is a status change, it simply means that something occurred in the form of a contract, or the expiration of some date. Details are for the 4 primary statuses you may see are below:
A - Active - Property is on the market and offered for sale with no offers under contract
AC- Active with a Contingency Offer - Property is under contract, but the contract has a contigency. Most contigencies are the need for the buyer to sell their home before proceeding to purchase the home they have a contract on.
PB- Pending Taking Backup Offers - Property is under contract and likely in the option period. Once the option period ends, a listing agent should move the property to Pending status, but many don't because they think that people will still be interested in the property.
P - Pending - Property is under contract and likely past the option period, waiting to close.
Note that if for some reason you are looking at a site where they are adding the property type as a suffix to the status, as in your question "A/RES", the "RES" simply means the listing is for a residential property. It's not the correct way to list the status, but some sites concatenate the information.

There are a number of abbreviations in the Austin MLS system. Here's a quick run down of some of the most frequently used.
A is active, which indicates a listing is available. If a seller accepts an offer, there is a time limit in which the listing agent must change the status, typically to P or PB.
P means pending, which means an offer has been accepted, and is on its way to S or sold. Contracts can fall out at this stage and the listing can return to A. If the status is set to PB, it means the listing is pending (working on one accepted offer) but that the listing is accepting backup offers for first consideration if the first contract falls through.
AC means Active Contingent, or the contract is contingent on the sale of another property.
W and X mean Withdrawn and Expired respectively - the listing is no longer on the market. T means temporarily off the market.
