You can choose a monochromatic (cream, off-white, white) furniture and use artwork, throws and pillow to change the mood.
White with red and a little black is a classic look that can go retro (think large red, black & white silkscreens of Marilyn Monroe) or ultra-modern like Ikea.
Put in a large impressionist painting and add soft yellow, aqua and lavender for a serene look.
While many magazines will recommend bold colored furniture, unless you absolutely love a particular color, stick with neutrals-cream, beige & black and use art, flowers, throws and pillows to easily change the look and feel of your new home. Enjoy!
A "pop" of color would be most welcome. Perhaps you have a favorite painting -- you can use that to set the stage and accessorize accordingly.
Start with your style -- do you like modern (such as Swedish), or classic (such as Queen Anne).
You probably should visit a few stores to see what appeals to you. You can even browse decorating magazines to get some ideas before you buy anything. Fortunately, there are a lot of resources.
Decorators are great to suggest colors, pictures, accessories, window treatments and what kind of furniture will look great in your place.
Best of Luck,
