My husband and I are considering relocating from the Bay Area to Oregon. California is getting too expensive and it's losing its appeal with us. We chose Oregon because we have family in California and its still driving distance for the holidays/visits and the no sales tax and low property taxes (compared to here) is tempting. I've done a little research and based on the criterias of what we're looking for, it seems like Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, and Tualatin are good matches. We've visited the Portland area several times and loved it (except for the rain/snow). My husband is in IT so we need to be close to the high-tech area, we have two children (3 and 1 year old) and finding a high-ranked school is top priority. I'm looking for a single-family home in a safe area, 5 yrs or newer, 2000 sf, at under 400k. We've never relocated out of the Bay Area so we would like some advice if this is the route we should take and the cities I mentioned above are the best suited for us.
Hi Lisa
Bethany is in the NE corner of Beaverton. Here is a link to google maps:

Thanks for your inputs. I've never heard of the Bethany area. Is it located in Beaverton? I will try to focus my research in this area to get more familiar with this town. Thanks again.
Hi Lisa,
If schools are a high priority, I would recommend checking out the Oregon Department of Education web site. It has a wealth of information about school districts and individual schools throughout Oregon including: student-teacher ratios, achievement on standardized tests, average class sizes, amount of spending per student, computer availability, etc. The site also discloses percentages for each district of: teen parents, ESL students, minorities, drop-outs, etc. If you want help figuring out which of the reports on the ODE web site might have the information you want, just get in touch, and I can help you navigate the site: http://www.bybryson.com/frames/school_reports.htm
Best of luck in your move.

There are so many great neighborhoods in the Portland metro area. I agree that Bethany is a very popular neighborhood for those working in Beaverton and Hillsboro. Forest Heights is also a great area.
But there are also many other choices depending your needs. And, don't forget to consider some of the areas in the core area of Portland where you have easy access to MAX our light rail system that is an efficient alternative to fighting traffic. Many of those neighborhoods have a timeless quality to them, in livley neighborhoods, close to downtown Portland and some good schools too. Because of that homes are holding their value very well. A great consideration when selecting where to live. Definitely an alternative depending on your lifestyle outside of work.
Here is a couple great resources on the web.

Check out the Bethany area in Beaverton. There is the Tanasbourne shopping area close by and a lot of great schools, parks, and shops. http://www.streetsoftanasbourne.com There is also a lot of newer construction in the area so it would be a simple matter to find the type of home you are looking for in that area.
Let me know if I can help. I have a few properties for sale in Bethany right now and enjoy working the area.
OK.
That is easy. Lots of good choices but your best bet is the Bethany area near Intel and the other 140 electronics firms here.
Lowest taxes and best schools and I think most livable area here. Best for parks, biking and walking, close to the city of Portland and yet not much traffic.

I have so much to tell you about the area I live and have called home for 25 years. We are raising the three boys here too! It is really great. Hope that helps as a quick start. I have lived in all those other areas too but this area is just hard to beat!
All my best!
