Hi Mike - I notice you are from San Antonio - whether you are re-locating or buying a vacation home makes a difference. I am certainly in agreement with Lisa, Best is definitely subjective. It's really a case of what meets your needs. The Mountain Express is a local paper along with the Asheville Citizen Times, and they are a great resource to get a feel for the area. Here's a 'best of' article published at Mountain Express citing their best neigborhood at the time. There are lots of article on 'best neighborhoods' if you google.
Bear in mind that Asheville has lots of small towns surrounding it such as Weaverville and Black Mountain within 15 minutes' drive to Asheville. Here are a few homes in Asheville between $300,000 and $700,000 for a first glimpse at what you get for your money in which neighborhoods: http://www.wncrmls.com/wnc/maildoc/b001323746.html Here's the article (you'll find lots more if you google) Uniquely Asheville We have ways of making you stay by Xpress Staff in Vol. 10 / Iss. 09 Best Neighborhood Montford Despite the neighborhood renaissance that saw West Asheville's first major arts festival, the third anniversary of the popular West End Bakery, and the opening of numerous other downtown-esque businesses along Haywood Road, the burgeoning Brooklyn of Asheville came in second behind repeat winner Montford. This historic district of period homes and dead-author stomping grounds -- O. Henry is buried in Montford's Riverside Cemetery, and Zelda Fitzgerald met her fate in a fire at the late Highland Hospital on Zillicoa Street -- got livelier this year with the opening of Pyper's Place, a cafe housed in the former Montford Laundromat. A half-block away, the 1-year-old Sweet Heaven Ice Cream & Music Cafe continues to thrive, combining organic ice cream and live folk music in a feel-good parfait that is quintessential Montford. -- MM Fri Mar 21 2008, 10:41 Web Reference: http://www.PattonPropertyGroup.com

Everyones definition of "Best" is very different. Before answering that question I always ask what is your vision of your move to this area. Do you want to be close to downtown to take advantage of the arts/resturants ect. or do you want to be out a litle further and have some space to spread out? Do you want a family friendly? The best thing to do is define what is "Best" for you and look at what fits that in your given price range. Happy to help in any way.

Jeff,
I can appreciate your comments about selling property in Asheville, NC from a company in Libertyville, IL. Actually we have a very strong presence in Western North Carolina helping people from across the country and internationally relocate. Our main market is retirement, second home and vacation properties within gated amenitized communities. When we receive a request for a more traditional residence, where a local realtor would best serve the client, we have established MLS agents we work with. There are hundreds of gated communities throughout the southeast and our business is to find the very best in sense of quality, value and reputation. We help narrow the many choices and work with our clients to make the very best decision. We have over a decade of experience with this market. Think about it, how is an local agent from Asheville, NC going to know any more about Queens Gap in Rutherfordton, NC than a company located in Chicago that only concentrates on gated amenitized communities across the SE. I hope this answers your question and maybe we can send some "local" clients your way! Mike,
Another good site to visit is provided. Asheville has so much to offer and it really depends on so many factors. Also, Asheville has been a very hot market over the past few years, even in this down market. But if you know where to look, you can pick up some really good deals. Developers are offering a lot of incentives. Visit our site and let me know if we can help in any way. Sun Feb 17 2008, 19:55 Web Reference: http://www.marianschafferrealty.com

Mike, I know you are thinking about moving months out. Here is a idea and website that may help. http://www.allashevillelistings.com/ put in your search criteria then each morning you will be emailed a list of all of the new homes for sale and price changes since your previous search. No more having to rely on manual searches. That way you can keep up with the Asheville market and have a good idea about whats for sale and prices.

Define middle class. Do you have a price range in mind? The challenge with Western North Carolina is also its beauty the mountains prevent track building. We go from single wides to million dollar homes. My $250,000. 3000 sqft home in Shreveport was considered expensive here it is considered an entry price in the young professional market. Now to answer your question. These cities near Asheville offer good property value and on-site construction: Candler Woodfin Leicester Weaverville Barnardsville Enka Swannanoa Mars Hill In addition you can sometimes get a deal on an older home in Asheville and renovate/flip. If I can help please contact me! Asheville is great place to live. Wed Jan 2 2008, 11:56 Web Reference: http://wallaceshealy.com
