What are the best areas to buy a house in Oakland? I know about 94610, 94611, and 94618. Any others? What?

My clients who do zip code searches generally start out with: 94608, 94610, 94611,94618,94619,94605, 94602. To Pacita's point, this list of zip codes encompasses an amazingly wide range of lifestyles and price ranges, from chic Lakeside condos, to North Oakland Craftsman, to wooded Montclair mid-century moderns with Bay views.

An experienced Oakland broker or agent will listen to what flavor of lifestyle you want to live in your new house and help you customize your zip code list accordingly.

Be aware that a couple of these zip codes do include both very nice and very sketchy neighborhoods, so you should be prepared, if you search by zip codes in Oakland to get some search results that you might pass over pretty quickly.

I'm attaching a link to a zip code map of Oakland (I didn't make it, but I've used it for years), so you can visualize which codes correspond with which physical areas.

I agree with all the agents who have answered this question thus far. However, please do not forget 94605 above the Oakland Zoo around the Golf Links Road area near the golf course.

In Oakland, it really depends on what your price range is and what you are looking for! There are some great areas that some folks don't even give a second look. Maxwell Park for instance, has some beautiful homes and great neighbors, schools, etc at a much lower price point than say the 94611, 18's.

I suggest you get hooked up with a local Realtor if you haven't already, and spill all your wishes to them and let them lead you on a tour of our fabulous city!

Best of luck,
Jessica

The answer will depend on your specific criteria. For example, in what budget range? Are you concerned about the school district? Do you need a large yard? Do you prefer new versus old? Do you want to be up in the hills (think Oakland Hills, anything along Skyline). Do you need quick access to the main highways? Do you want to be near parks?

Everyone mentioned some really terrific areas. But it's a world of difference between Montclair/Rockridge to Upper Laurel or Maxwell Park.

Start with specifying your budget range and what you're already preapproved to buy....then engage a realtor, if you haven't already, to fine tune your search criteria and then do a targeted search to maximize your efficiency in finding the right property that suits most, if not all your needs.

There are so many of us who can do this for you....but we all need specific parameters and guidelines to help you.

Best of luck to you.

Hi Barbara
You got it! Add portions of 94619 (up by Highway 13 and many spots down High ...) add 94609 the Temescal area near and off of College Ave... and depending on professional - kids- no kids-pets-single family - condo, plus the ever present price range -I also have friends who live 94612 in a beautiful high rise on Lake Merritt ...
Lots of options!
Katie

It depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking to make a sound investment in a up and coming neighborhood, check into the Temescal district (94609), Areas of N.Oakland (94608), and the Laurel/Dimond District (94602). I have neighborhood descriptions on my website that might be helpful to you.

A good rule of thumb to follow is the closer you stick to 580..the better. Good luck with your house hunting!!

Hello Barbara,

There are so many hidden gems of neighborhoods in Oakland that many people overlook. Outside of the areas that you mention, such as, Crocker Highlands, Rockridge, Upper Rockridge, and Montclair, I would include Ridgemont, Sequoyah Heights, Haddon Hills, Joaquin Miller and Redwood Heights to name a few. If you are interested in seeing any of these neighborhoods, I'd be happy to bring you on a tour!

Best,
Mary
