from scratch other then we will have a good chunk of money for a down payment on a house. he is american and i'm canadian. is it going to be really hard getting a mortgage. he has bad credt because of his ex wife

I he has bad credit you can purchase as a foreign national with anywhere from 30-40% down.....since your husband is a US citizen he could go FHA w/only 3.5% down.....needs a credit score called FICO of about 640....

This will depend on what is bringing his credit score down and if there are ways to explain the negative marks. There are FHA programs out now that are more flexible depending on the lender/company used. If you have to buy as a "foreign national" (ie: not using his credit/nationality due to too low credit), then you will have to put 25-30% down. The best bet is to have his credit pulled, a full 3 score search.
