We are moving to Seattle, Wa and are wondering if anyone has input as to which is a better locale for a son

entering high school and myself working on Madison and Third--Broadmoor or The Highlands?
Thanks in advance, Frank S

Broadmoor, close to good schools both private and public.

Dear Frank,

Having sold homes in The Highlands, Broadmoor, Medina and other similar communities on a regular basis, I can offer the best advice with a little more information - your son's school, other interests/activities, etc.

Feel free to contact me at your convenience - joel@windermere.com

You may find my website informative and helpful as well.

Hi Frank,

I concur with Karen McKnight below about finding a community match based upon your family's area of interest as well as budget and location for your commute. The Highlands is farther and more remote. Due to the nature of the parcels and the trees, it has a more private/less social feel to the neighborhood than does Broadmoor.

If you like the equestrian lifestyle, there are areas on the Eastside more conducive to that such as the Bridle Trails area of Bellevue or parts of Woodinville, Redmond and Issaquah. If you sail, you might select a community based upon proximity to one of our marinas. If you golf, well you get the drift...

Another consideration that families might ponder are proximities to services and school districts for children with special needs.

The key to finding the perfect setting for your new lifestyle in the Northwest is selecting a thoughtful agent who will seriously listen to you, and one who will provide you with options you wouldn't have necessarily known were available.

We have a cooperatiive multiple listing service in the greater Seattle Metro and suburban areas. So once you find an agent who is a good fit for you, that person will have access to all the same listings as any other member of our Northwest Multiple Listing Service.

Best wishes!

I skimmed the other answers and found that I concur with the consensus that Broadmoor would be a good location for your work location. Also, the question of public versus private school has been raised and I concur with the answers.

The only other questions I would raise, are what are your son's interests? I have found people will choose an area because a specific school excels in an area in which their son excels.

Speaking of private schools, Lakeside is one of the top private schools in the country. Two public high schools in Bellevue - Bellevue High and Newport High are also very highly rated - in the top 20 if I remember correctly.

Crime rates on Mercer Island and the Eastside are lower than Seattle if that is a concern for you. I have a link on my website to demograhic information under About the Area. Also, most city websites hava a section on crime and you can "Google" the name of the city and their site usually comes up at the top.

What may be more important is your lifestyle. Do you like walking to shos and restaurants or do you like to live where there is more of a country feel? I have a link on my site to Webtowns, which describes most of the neighborhoods in the Seattle area. I also have a link to Market Statistics with some very infromative graphs.

Hi Frank,
Yes, Broadmore would be my choice if you are considering a Private School for your son.

If you are considering a public school experience for your son, you should look to the East Side: Mercer Island, Bellevue, Newcastle, Issaquah These areas are located across Lake Washington along the I90 freeway and provide easy access to downtown Seattle. All have award winning public schools, huge community and parental involvement, sports, community and they are also wonderful places to live. However, if your commute time is a consideration, Mercer Island is your best choice. People move to Mercer Island specifically because it is 12 minutes from the south end of Mercer Island to the Madison exit off Interstate 5. Mercer Island residents have access to the carpool (HOV) lanes on the I90, even when they have a single passenger. You can actually get to Madison & 3rd faster from MI then you can if you live in Broadmore.

Check out this link for school information or go to my website for more information regarding schools and relocating to the Seattle area. The great thing about Seattle is that it is within minutes of so many wonderful places.
Good Luck

Frank,

I agree with Sandra. the commute from the Highlands would be difficult. Her are a few web sites you may want to look at.

www.schoolmatters.com
www.greatschools.net

Both offer great information on local schools.

Good luck.

HI Frank -
I like both these areas, but as a parent with a highschooler, I would have to know whether or not your son is going to be going to public or private school. The Highlands are beautiful, but not as ideal for you for work. Lakeside would be the best private school for the Highlands.

I think Broadmoor is a more ideal location for you both with work and with your son. Being right next to the Arboretum and the urban activities in Madison Park would be great for a highschooler, plus your work would be more convenient. Broadmoor also has easy access to all that Seattle has to offer.

Overall, it will depend on the question of public or private school as well as other activities your son might be interested in.

I hope that helps at all - please feel free to contact me if you have more questions:) Good luck! I hope you and your son love Seattle!

HI Frank -

Will your son be in public or private school? What other activities does he like to do?

I love the Highlands - The Olmsted brothers are a pretty famous landscape architecture group from about a hundred years ago and they completely designed The HIghlands neighborhood. The houses are estates and just beautiful. Lakeside would be the private school I would look at for the HIghlands.

Broadmoor is also just gorgeous! It is very close to both your new work and also fun activities for your son because it's near downtown urban center for Madison Park. Madison Park is beautiful and has easy access to Lake Washington and the Eastside. Broadmoor is right next to the Arboretum and all the activities around it, plus it is just easier to access more of the Seattle area.

Of the two, if it were me, Broadmoor.

Broadmoor and The Highlands are both lovely areas. My concern for you with The Highlands is that your commute to work would be miserable. You would lose at least an hour of each day in the car. Therefore, absent information about where your son will be attending school, Broadmoor makes the most sense.
