Should I recommend a kicthen update with stainless steel or black appliances?

Asked by Irma Terry, 30328 Fri Aug 31, 2012

I recently read an article that stated stainless steel appliances are on the way out.

Instead of such a specific suggestion, give the seller a link to the latest trend in kitchen and he or she can use that as a guide.

Stainless Steel Appliances are the most popular now & get the majority vote, but with granite counter tops, black appliances can look great & are easier to clean, without the streaking. If I bought either I would make sure they are Energy Star Appliances, which are energy efficient & will save you on electric costs, which can add up significantly over time. This is a feature that always appeals to a buyer, whenever they can save money with a product that looks great & functions well.

Yeow....making any type of specific recommendation, as an agent, may be oppening yourself up to criticism. Offering possible options and letting the owner select their own option would be a much safer approach.

If it needs updating......that all that needs to be said.....leave the rest to the owner!

I would still recommend updating the kitchen with stainless steel. Without the buyer being able to select the style and color you might be excluding some potential buyers. Even though there might be some new styles coming out, many people still feel that stainless steel is an upgrade.

Good point Taylor - I read that retro colors are huge right now - harvest gold and aqua green are new colors in the 2013 Viking Catalog

It's all about the appropriateness, the feng shui and the scale, right?

I would never base a decision like this on stainless steel vs. stainless steel look vs. black vs. white vs. vintage two tone cocoa...

Read Dwell Magazine and contemplate the possibilities...

Appliances constitute an update? What are we talking, I would epxect if they put in a new fridge that they'd want to take it. That leaves what, dishwasher, range, microwave and maybe fan hood?

If it's high end in SSprings, need to have top quality stainless.

What did this article say was on the way in then? Most of my buyer clients are still strongly preferring stainless appliances. Although, there are several appliance manufacturers now that offer a different material that looks like stainless, but is magnetic and easier to clean. This is what we just put in our new home, and we love it. Check out the GE clean steel series to see what I'm talking about: http://www.geappliances.com/products/cleansteel.htm

In our area, we still find most home buyers want stainless steel appliances. Of course, styles and color change all the time, but for now seems like stainless steel appliances are still in demand and especialliy in the high end homes.
