Safe area in Toledo OH near Univ of Toledo medical center to live for single medical resident?

I'm a woman starting medical residency in Toledo OH, and I don't know the area. how are downtown toledo and southwyck like? and the area just south of UTMC? Priorities are safety, attached garage or underground parking or garage building and newer construction (last 10 years) and 1-2 bdrm/1-2 bath condominium. It's been hard to find a newer construction condominium since most I have searched for have come back with converted apartment buildings. Does anyone have suggestions on 1) safe areas and 2) condos that have the features i'm looking for? If that is not realistic, what suggestions do you have for SAFE areas?

34 condos sold in Toledo area in June versus an inventory of 783 for sale
(and June was a 'brisk' month)

a 2 years supply! And that is NOT counting upcoming foreclosures.

If you are going to be in the area for a couple years rent!

Got another suggestion - stay at "Extended Stay America" in Holland for ~ $1000/month. it's about 5 mi to Med Center. Then look around; but the housing market in Toledo is in a declining situation; maybe renting is the best choice for a short timer?

UT runs shuttle buses between campuses. (including the medical center); so If find housing by UT main or Scott campus you can take the shuttle. UT main area is safe more or less. There are cheap condos on Central.

Good luck

My Mother is selling her home in Toledo. It is off River Rd. and just down the street from Carty. If you would prefer a 3 bed ranch with a 2 car side entry garage it is affordable and in the area that would make your commute easy.

Ottawa Hills is one of the safest neighborhoods in the United States. I walk my dog there alone in the wee hours of the morning. Great, great walking paths, beautiful area.

I lived there years ago, but have no idea what the area is like now. Just thought I'd stop by and say "GO ROCKETS!"

I've helped several new residents find homes in the last couple of years. The answer will depend on your price range. I actually have a list of over 60 condo/villas in the areas most popular to UT Medical Center residents. These areas are Holland, Heatherdowns/River Rd, and Wildwood/Reynolds. I'm happy to send these properties to you and set you up on an automated notification system to let you know when anything new comes on the market. Contact me directly at kendall@danberry.com and I'll make sure you have all of the property information. I'll also need to know the price range you're interested in because the ones available run anywhere from $87,000 to $295,000.

I'm glad that you're trying to do some research before moving into the area. Your question is a little bit difficult to answer, just because there are many pockets and areas where crime stats can vary quite significantly, even with neighborhoods that are located next to each other. That being said, from what I have been able to look at, I would maybe avoid the area immediately to the south of UTMC. Downtown has some great condos, and I know people that live there and love it. That being said, it is considered an area of higher crime according to the stats. I did find condos to the west of UTMC that could work, although most of them are converted apartments. There are some nice newer (late 90's) condos that are a little higher price (not apartment style), but could work very well for you as well. I would love to talk to you and find out more info on your move to town and more details about what you're looking for. Feel free to contact me directly and we can chat. Take care!
