PJM: The commuting times around central Jersey are such that you can pick and chose based on your own personal taste. The situation varies from country "Piney” to Sophisticated Philadelphian or Manhattenite. Moorestown, for instance is 23 minutes from down town Philly and hardly more to the base gate.
My advice? Do a little Mapquest and a little driving around. I worked on base as a civilian contractor, commuting from the Trenton-Hamilton area for over two years. I have relatives who live in Brick, near the shore, and are now retired reservists and both of the couple found no problem with the commute but they LOVE the shore. The shore is about an hour and twenty minutes from Philly. No Realtor should try to cover all the ground about which I have just spoken.
Once you figure out the vastly different lifestyle alternatives (including hitting the NYC scene,) you can start figuring out where you will be most happy. A Navy type of my acquaintance, with three years to go on twenty, has been transferred to the Arlington area. Up to now, he's always lived near his assignment and commuted to the nearest sailing center. This time he's locating to Annapolis and commuting to the assignment. What floats your boat?
Best wishes,
