If you're looking at the north side, check out Buford. I grew up there and its a great city, great schools, and many well-established neighborhoods. You're about 25 minutes from the perimeter via 985 and you'll find less of the sprawl and congestion consistant with the suburbs to the South. Additionally, you'll be close to Lake Lanier, an hour from the North Georgia mountains, and close enough to enjoy the city whenever you like.

One of the sought after areas in Gwinnett County is Suwanee. It has good schools and very nice planned communities and homes. In addition, the area has added great shops, restaurants and tasteful things that a family as well as Mom & Dad will enjoy. Lake Lanier, a huge lake and beautifal recreation area is just 25 to 30 minutes to the North. You are in between two Malls with Georgia Mall being just 15 minutes away. Interstatr 85 is 10 minutes from Suwanee. Just acroos the highway and depending on how much you wish to spend is an upscale community on Sugarloaf. The Gwinnett Braves are 20 minutes across I-85 (Triple A Baseball and Gwinnet has an areana for rock shows, concerts and other forms of family intertainment available. You are about 25 miles North of the City of Atlanta and cost are much more reasonable. You might save 25 to 33% rather than going down to the I-285 perimeter (North end of 72 mile circle around Atlanta. Dunwoody is popular , 25 minutes closer in but more expensive.

Zeke - where will you be working? Metro Atlanta commuting is atrocious and if you like being behind the windshield then plenty of cities and towns will meet your basic needs...Bethlehem? Hoschton? How about Union City or Palmetto?
Dunwoody, Tucker, Lilburn, and a few other pockets of suburban bliss in the $250-300's are much closer in to the A than Suwannee, although Suwannee is an award-winning, remarkable town, with a lot of positives for suburban families.
If I had your criteria then I would still strive for a less than 30 minute commute, and then decide what neighborhoods work...good luck and please call a Trulia Voice that knows your submarket when you are ready!
