Considering moving to bay area with family and would like to first rent (single family home) on the peninsula b/w Millbrae and Redwood City while we get a feel for the market and the communities. Should we contact a realtor now for this or later when seriously looking to buy?
Kbcb,
Realtors are a great way to find out about neighborhoods before renting/buying. As mentioned before, it's also a good way to build relationship when it comes time to buy.
Remember to make sure that when you choose a realtor they are not just looking on the MLS. Make sure they are also checking craigslist and giving you contact information for trusted property management companies.

I would talk with a few Realtors prior to moving into the area. They can set up an email search for you so whenever a rental comes on the market that fits your criteria, you will receive an email.
I always advise people who are moving into an area they don't know to rent first. Once you are settled, you can find the place you want to call home for years. It's too expensive to make a mistake in real estate.
Unfortunately I don't do rentals, but If you need an agent who specializes in rentals, contact http://www.Faytherentalqueen.com or Femarie@aol.com.
Good luck,

I agree with all of my colleagues. Contact the Realtor now. They will help, you can build the relationship and know you have someone you can trust when it is time to buy.
Good luck in finding a great rental and a future home!
The market on the Peninsula is also a very hot rental market right now. A Realtor will help you stand out from other prospective applicants with the landlord or property manager. Your happiness with the neighborhood that you eventually live in for the next year or so will probably be improved if you have a professional give their recommendation. Definitely hire a Realtor.
Thanks everyone! I guess I wasn't sure if realtors were interested in people who were "only renting" of if realtors actually showed rental homes. I agree about the relationship-building and think that's important, too, but wasn't sure if realtors would welcome clients who weren't ready to buy right up front after the move. Thanks!
It is unanimous! (So far!) A Realtor is the way to go. In addition to helping yumfind your new home, they will be a val;uable resource through yourmove - and beyond. Good luck!

Do it now! You have two great reasons - you get someone with great knowledge of your area; AND you get to see their willingness and availability to assist.
Talk about a great way to get to know your agent. I find it tantamount to a successful assimilation into your new surroundings. Most realtors today understand the basic fundamentals of relationship building.
If I assisted you in finding your first home; & we had a great working relationship - won't you be calling me when it comes time to move up or downsize?
Now is as good a time as any - Carpe Diem!!
Hi,
Since you've already decided you are going to contact a Realtor, do it now. Any good Realtor will work at their client's pace and can begin to be your eyes and ears in the marketplace. They can help you take the necessary and relevant steps to get you ready. That way when you are "seriously looking to buy", they are already on top of things for you. Many people do end up being ready to buy before the time they originally planned.
If you need a referral for a Realtor, feel free to contact me!

A realtor should be able to help you with rentals. They tend to go quick in this area. So you probably don't need to seriously look more than about a month or so before you want to move. I used to live in Foster City and thats a nice place to live. I also like San Mateo and Burlingame. If you need a referral to a good realtor there let me know. Our company is based in the bay area.
A Realtor can help you find a lease and help you learn about the area. I would contact one now.
