Racial Diversity-Greenville, SC
This might be a touchy question, but I don't know how to get an answer without asking. We are a retired couple selling our residence in Michigan and our winter place in Florida and planning on moving totally into the Greenville vicinity. We will be bringing extra baggage, an adult daughter and her three kids. All of the kids are bi-racial. Are there any areas that should be avoided?

As a transplant from Southern California, born and raised in Orange County. . I am from an ethnic background, w/ 4 children. I had a similar concern for the family. We have experienced much respect and kindness living here for 2 years now. We welcome you to the city; as Greenville has welcomed us. Take Care! We look forward to having you here. (consumer opinion)

Rick, that is something that realtors are not permitted to comment about and shouldn't. If you google Greenville, SC, you can find some city-data info on demographics and ethnic backgrounds of the town. I would also suggest spending some time driving around, have lunch and dinner...hang out and get a feel for the area.

Greenville, SC is a wonderful place to live and I have lived here 20 years. Your fears are groundless. I believe you and your family would be very welcome anywhere in this community. Realtors here are great and adhere strongly to Fair Housing Laws. These laws are simple: treat everyone well and no one can ever say you didn't. We welcome you to our community and would be honored to help you find a nice home here. I am a member of the "A Team for Relocation" to Greenville and would like to send you some information about relocating here. Please email me at janebkrueger@yahoo.com or call me at 864-350-7128 so that I will have an address where we can send this information.

Rick,
As the others have said, we as Realtors have to be very careful in this area. If we say to avoid a particular area, we would (and, I believe, should) lose our license immediately. Fortunately, the answer to your question is that, in my experience, you will have no problem with this issue you are concerned about. Greenville is very racially diverse; in fact, per the 2000 census, only 40% of Greenville County is originally from Greenville County. One of the factors contributing to that statistic (and also contributing to Greenville's great economy) is that Greenville is a hub for international business. Please let me know if I can be of further help with your home search. You can reach me anytime at 864-363-8592 or sbright@kw.com. As a Realtor who relocated to SC from FL within the past couple of years, I can tell you the majority of the people in this area are as friendly as they come. The best advice I could give you is to find a Realtor who will work with you to find the right home, and I've had this exact question come up before from customers, I will tell you what I tell them, I can not show you or not show you properties based on any of the protected classes under Federal Fair Housing laws, what you can do is ask for directions to any of the homes you are considering going to view, so that you may drive by and get a feel for the neighborhoods you are considering. Your own eyes are going to be the best judge if it looks like an area that will be a comfortable fit for you and your family. If you would like any help please feel free to call or email me.
