The first question I always ask is townhouse or single family home? Then, do you have children? Maybe talk a little about your work commute if you have one.
McLean is not an enormous area, so you will be part of the scene no matter where you are.
Closer to D.C. seems to be important to diplomats, and gated communities are highly prized.
Let me know if you would like to go for a tour.
Good question. Several have already given you some good advice. Let me expand; there are several detached homes that are currently active in your price range in the McLean and Langley HS pyramid. None appear to be foreclosures or short sales @ this time. You can see the current homes that are available at http://www.2hdb.com/georgecreed. This has the same database of homes that REALTORs see on MRIS as it is updated regularly as agents add and/or sell (or otherwise remove listings). When you see something that you like -send me an e-mail. Thanks. George
The common thread below is correct. An owl to one is a nightingale to another. I can add one thought though. You might find good opportunities in the distressed property arena (short sale or foreclosure) that allows you to get a nicer home (within your budget), in a neighborhood that is normally more expensive then the 850k price point.
I'm a distressed property expert, and focus a lot of my time looking for these kinds of opportunities for my clients. If this is something you would like to pursue, feel free to call or email me.
Regardless of what direction you go in, I wish you the best of luck.

Great question! Most desirable though is very subjective. To some a blonde is most desirable..to some a red head. If you clarify as to what is desirable for you then the question is more easily answered. As some say..why Mclean? Is it the schools? The walkability? Proximity to your work? I am happy to help you clarify and assist in any way. Thanks!

It helps , if we parse out this qs.
U have already chosen McLean.
First thing 2 ask is why?
Most people chose McLean for the schools.
1. High Schools: 4 high schools: All great schools.
Thomas Jefferson: County and area wide competition. Best chance for getting in is , if u r in FFX county).
22102: Marshal(Falls Church) and Langley(McLean).
22101: McLean High
Most homes in 22101 r over ur price range.
But there r plenty in ur price range, if u don't mind older homes or smaller footprints.
Once I saty this much, it is important that u build ur professional team of RE Agent and Lender.
If u need 2 integrate this with ur financial plan u should have a cpa in ur team(tax issues).
Then ur agent will setup a tactical plan for u.
