We are suppose to close the deal this Friday, but thats just 2days away, so i doubt it will happen. We are just waiting for the underwriter to give us the clear to close. The papers have been with him since thursday july 2. So it will be a week tomorrow. How much time should we ask for an extension?

Clear communication between all parties is key.

I would follow the advice given below, particularly "going to their office". I would also ask your Realtor for assistance. Underwriters are having lots of issues with everything, so I advise my clients to beware of the production problems facing lenders and give them MORE time to work them out.

You should know that your lender should be able to tell you when you are going to close, particularly near the funding date. If you do not get a clear response, there are a couple of issues...your lender needs to get better at communicating, your Realtor needs to keep tabs on the lender, and you need to hold both accountable.

Ask the question "How much more time do we need"? In most cases once the docs are signed you need to close "no later than" a date, so pick a date that is not going to stress everyone out. Sometimes I don't think that lenders are thinking about scheduling moving trucks, turning on utilities, etc. Your Realtor, however, should be like a hen, overseeing the whole farm.

If your LO works for a bank call and ask to speak with her manager. Ask them to get you a status update. If not and she is local go visit her at work:)

Depends on the bank and how long they take in underwriting, definitely a question for your loan officer. Also, be aware that after the u/w sees the file there may be conditions to be met so that will take longer. In this day of underwriting by fear, the banks are turning every stone over twice. If your loan officer is not answering the phone call the boss. Only by talking to the LO or the boss will you know how long to ask for an extension. Has your realtor called the loan officer?
