both middle and elementary school and would like to return to NY. Friends recommended Port Washington, Great Neck and Manhasset. Any input as to what we will be able to get in the $900k-$1mio range? Thanks.

I'm a full time agent who will give you the time you deserve in your search. Both comminities are great in their own way. Many people seem to prefer the Manhasset school district over the Port Washington S/D. Port Washington is very scenic due to Manhasset Bay. Manhasset has is a little closer to the local highways and also has the better shopping. The homes in Manhasset are a bit more expensive than Port Washington. However,due to present market conditions there are many homes in Manhasset at the 1 million or lower point. Port Washington has many homes near the bay and close to the train station for less than a million.

Every community provides you different envoriment and life style. I am a realtor in Manhasset, also was working in Port Washington 4 years ago.
First of all,I think you have to ask yourself what is your priority? or what's kind of house you prefer?(ranch/colonial/spilt).Certain area only offers specific style hosue here...Do you need easily to access LIRR train to work? what is the hightest property tax you would like to pay yearly? If you have all answers for what you want then it's easier for a realtor to show you and help you decide which is the best area to live.

Sure... you can do very well in this price range. It depends on what your expectations are. You will get more in Port Washington for the money, Manhasset and Great Neck will be a little higher. You have many great choices in any of those areas; however, if you are not too familiar with those towns it's time to visit and explore your preferences--look at shops, transportation, parks, dine at local eateries, etc., and then take it from there.

There are currenlty about 34 properties on the market in the areas you have selected and price range $900K-$1M.
Most of them are colonial types, some splits, ranches, 2 tudors and one cape. Most of the homes have 4-5 bedrooms with 2-3.5 bathrooms.
