Joan, AC is often unable to be tested in our region between October and April. It's just too cold to run without potential damage. The inspector should have mentioned this in his report, but that would be why the crack was nit found. Similarly, if there is no washer to run, the plumbing supply lines cannot be tested wirhout pouring water all over the floor. Even where the washer is present, many inspectors do not test removable appliances. I believe you should contact the inspector, and let him know what's wrong. He should offer to come back out to look at it, and maybe can help you formulate your case against the seller.

Sorry to hear about the issues your daughter is having. You should check with your realtor and see if they had a sellers disclosure. See if any items were listed as broken or not working. Also see if this home was sold AS-IS. The home inspector should have tested the A/C and checked the water lines, but I don't know if they are held liable for missing anything. The other option your daughter would have is to get a renovation loan to repair what's broken as well as do any other renovations or upgrades.
