Most landlords use your credit report to simply judge if you are a risk for not paying your rent. If your "credit isn't great" because of late or missed payments you will be seen as a risk to the landlord. If there are other issues, providing the details to a landlord might make him willing to rent to you.

There are two important factors: 1.) Do you have enough money to pay? 2.) Do you pay what you owe or do you try to find a way to not pay? If you make enough money to pay and show that you have been committed to paying all of your bills, other factors lowering your FICO score might be considered unimportant.
