Rob: I will make it easier for you. . The beltway (I-495)around Washington DC , I-270 starts there and it goes North.. .every exit # represents approximately how many miles you are from I-495 the Beltway.
I-270 Corridor has absorbed significant growth over the past several decades while retaining an enviable quality of life for all people living around it.
Montgomery County should be the first place to look. ..all the way to exit #16 on I-270 Germantown exit
That's right. .it is 16 miles away from the Beltway. .
Search Maryland cities including Germantown MD here: www.ReallyNiceHomes.com

Hello Rob, While I agree Harford county offers some great benefits, before I could give you good advice I'd really need to know what city in maryland you're going to be employed in. Marylands a big state with 23 counties stretching from the eastern shore to western maryland. You can email me your info from my website listed below, I'd be excited to help you become a Marylander, you'll love it here no matter which county!

Jana Wells has given you great advice from someone that sounds like she already lives in Harford County. I have lived in both Baltimore and Harford and if you want newer schools and open space you cannot beat it for the prices.

Most of the IT jobs are going to be in Rockville, Bethesda, Silver Spring or to a lesser degree Gaithersburg. Check out Dice.com [or other job sites] to see what's available. Given these work cities, you can find something very nice for that range in Gaithersburg, Germantown or maybe a little further out along the I-270 corridor for a nice SFH. Visit my site to setup a search.

Harford county is your best bet. It has fabulous schools Patterson mill middle and High school are brand new as well as many other schools being re-built. I would stay away from Baltimore county and for the price range you are looking in Montgomery and Howard counties are not really an option. 300-400K could buy you something very nice in the Harford county area and you are still close to many of the places you want to be.

I have lived in the Baltimore/Harford county area of Maryland all my life. I enjoy the easy commute to BWI airport and downtown Baltimore while still having nice open spaces and parks around. If you want to be on or near the water there are some affordable places to own townhomes, condos or single homes. I would say your interests and price range will determine your area. Let me know if you want help in my area. Kelly Willey, Long and Foster

Thanks very much for all your answers. I was recently away on business but have come back. To clarify a bit I will most probably be working remote, so I suppose that will give me a certain amount of flexibility. Although I would still like to be within a reasonable distance of IT companies if my situation changes.

Rob,
The I270 corridor which is Montgomery County MD, mostly Rockville, Gaithersburg, Germantown & Clarksburg has many IT companies as well as many companies like Lockhead Martin that have large IT departments. As well as having NIH & many other Government institutions here, there are a plethora of IT jobs, especially since that is a specialized field. Regarding housing prices, there are certainly quite a large amount of options that You will find in the 300K-400K price range. Everything upto 4 bedroom almost new homes or new condominiums. Most of the buyers & sellers I work with are in your same price range & in the same areas that I am mentioning & they are finding homes that are exceeding their expectations. Should You have any questions, please feel free to call (888.540.5674) or e-mail me anytime.

In the DC area, a huge amount of home selection depends on your commute. Most of us would have entirely different suggestions if you said you had a job in, say, Southern Maryland, versus the I-270 corridor, versus Baltimore. For most areas, your price range for what you're looking for should be fine. And there are nice, desirable neighborhoods in all those areas. Bill's suggestion is fine for Southern Maryland (and even into DC), but I'd probably suggest somewhere else if a person was working at Fort Belvoir. At least, I'd suggest a person do a test commute; some people are fine with longer commutes; others aren't.

Hope that helps.

The best buys in the Washington DC area are in Charles County - located within 25 miles of Washington DC - taxes are lower than the surrounding counties and prices of homes are much better - do you kow where exactly you will be working - we are close to PAX River, Indian Head, Andrews AFB, Bolling AFB, Fort Belvoir and of course Downtown Washington DC - Check out Waldorf, Indian Head, White Plains, LaPlata, etc, all in Charles County-email me what you are looking for, and I can set you up to receive daily updates of new listings as they come on the market - of course right now there are some super buys in pre foreclosure properties, that we specialize in!
Good Luck on your search!

Hi Rob:

There are many diiferent great places to live in Maryland!
Without having some idea of where you're going to be working, it's difficult to really answer your question.
What kind of commute are you interested in?
