Joni, Both Buyer and Seller in 94133

Looking for advice on selecting an agent to help buy a house in SF/Bernal Heights.

Asked by Joni, 94133 Tue Nov 6, 2007

We've been looking for a few months now and have a good idea of what we like, so the next step is to find an agent we like. We'd prefer to find an agent that's very familiar with Bernal. Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Joni. The most important thing when choosing an agent is that you are comfortable with them. There are many good agents, and many who know Bernal very well, so at some point it becomes hard to differentiate. I believe it comes down to a personal connection.

As the others have said, talk to a few; then go with what feels right. Buying a home is about family and emotion, so choose an agent you are willing to share that with. How do you find the few to interview? It can't be that hard, we're everywhere! You can interview those you meet in the open houses in Bernal, or go to the company websites and find those who specialize in the neighborhood.

Hi Joni, In addition to the other advice given I think it is important to use an agent who also lives in Bernal and knows all the ins and outs. There are many different areas of value just within the neighborhood and you need someone who can help you determine the correct value. BTW, I have lived in the neighborhood for over 2 years and have helped clients with both listings and purchases in Bernal.

One more suggestion. Look for a realtor with an ABR designation. They have taken an additional educational course and become certified as an accredited buyers rep.

Hello Joni, Congratulations on your decision to buy your first home. Bernal Heights is a wonderful neighborhood. Per Cindy Maves answer...... if your friends and family do not know of a realtor specializing in the area, feel free to give me a call. I am a native San Franciscan. My family goes back 3 generations in both the Mission and Bernal Heights areas. I am a first time home buyer specialist as well. See link below for my profile.

Good luck with your search, whomever you choose!

Joni, one additional thing...tell the agents you interview EXACTLY what you expect from them. Let them decide if they will be able to provide the service level you require. If you need help with that....This is where you can get some guidance.

A) Daily updates (email or by phone)
B) Weekly showings (every weekend?)
C) Provide advice for Lending choices
D) Provide referrals for Inspection Professionals
E) ....You fill in.....

Ask your friends, family for a referral of a full-time realtor that works in that area. Call a few companies in the area and ask the manager for a referral of someone who sells in the area. You could also go on line and look at the companies web sites and look at agent profiles. Interview 2-3 agents. Are you a first-time home buyer? If so, you may want to look for someone that specializes in that.

Look for someone that will be there with you every step of the way and will be working for you directly as a buyer agent. Have them explain what is involved in that. Feel comfortable with whovever you choose and good luck!
