Looking for a Buyer's Agent

Jessica
Home Buyer
Chicago, IL

Hello, I am a first time buyer pre-approved for a loan of 135k. I am interested in purchasing in Albany Park, Portage Park and Jefferson Park. I have worked with one realtor, but he is "accustomed to dealing with customers in a much higher price point" and has consequently gone on an extended holiday. How can I find a realtor that will help me? Any feedback appreciated! Thanks!

It is disappointing to hear that an agent would not help you to find the home you are looking for, but there are those of us who beleive that helping others make their dreams come true is what is most important! I never like to see first time buyers get a bad tast for Real Estate Agents because we are not all the same. Hi Jessica,

It's disappointing to hear that an agent is not willing to provide service to you.

I do want to clarify two things...I am assuming you are looking for an attached property (condo, etc.) not a detached (single family home) in those areas you chose. Right now, there are 19 active listings on the MLS for attached properties between the 3 neighborhoods.

Also, are you needing to buy right now? Needing to buy=your lease is up shortly in the next 30 days or your job has driven you to this area, other life circumstances, etc..

I would be happy to sit down with you and assess your needs and situation if you'd like to contact me.

Hello Jessica. If you have friends, family or co-workers who have purchased recently you can ask how their experience was. You shouldn't have to do too much research in order to find a good agent. Most important thing is to go with your gut. Does the agent appear to be too busy for you or not make you fell like your important? If that is the case then get rid of them. Move onto the next agent and just like most things these days find one that makes you fell like you're important.

I don't care if you're buying a $30,000 parking space or a $1 million dollar home you deserve to feel like the most important person to a good agent. I saw one of the answers told you to drive up and down streets and search on Realtor.com....terrible idea. Sorry. Yes, use Realtor.com and other MLS search tools to help supplement your search. In the chicagoland area the seller pays all commissions so take advantage of what is essentially a free tool and find an agent that you like and that makes you feel important. I wish you luck!! Don't be afraid to ask tough questions and just remember that you're the one that makes the final decision. Realtors are here to help, assist and give our expert advice. it's up to you to take it and trust it.

Hi Jessica,

Your $135,000 purchase is just as important to you as a $800,000 purchase is to the 'higher price point' customer. It's all relative, and I'm sorry you were made to feel less than important.

Here are some things to consider when looking for a good buyer's agent:

1. Interview several candidates before deciding which one to work with. Ask for referrals from friends an interview them. Don't be afraid to ask for references, either.

2. Ask about experience!

3. Make sure the agent has time for you. Just because you are a lower price point customer does not mean you should be put last on the totem pole.

4. Ask if the agent will be with you at the closing, especially as a first-time buyer. Situations can arise at closing; you want to be sure your advocate is there with you.

5. Don't be afraid of a Buyer Broker Agreement. Sure, this is a document that protects a broker's interest, but this is also the chance to spell out the terms of the arrangement in writing to make sure that YOU are protected as a buyer, as well.

Jessica, there are plenty of agents who are eager to help you and to show you that you and your needs matter.

I am a Chicago agent. If I can answer any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Take care and best of luck!

Hi Jessica-

My wife recently completed a transaction as a buyer's agent for a purchase price of ~$150k. We live in the area. She is relatively new to the business so I know she is eager to work hard and go above and beyond the call of duty to make her buyers happy. Feel free to contact her through the link below should you decide to move forward.

Hi Jessica,
I would love to help you reach your real estate goals, within your price point and desired neighborhood if you are seeking some assistance! My email address can be found on our company website or profile, otherwise I would be happy to suggest some options over the phone. Searching through property on Craigslist and/or Realtor.com are also great ways to give you a better understanding of what is out there. Best of Luck!

Frankly, Jessica I would recommend u use Realtor.com to search out properties. Determine those you would like to learn more about, then call the local real estate office for the addresses. You do not have to commit to anyone just to get an address.

Then when u have compiled a list of properties you would like to see, call on a realtor or in the alternative, if u do a drive by and want to see more, call the agent on the sign. Agents luv to sell their own properties!

Good Luck!

I'm going to get alot of flack for this response, but I run my business on 'Honesty, Integrity, Results' and what u are experiencing is all to common . . . although not many will admit it!

It is unfortunate that there are some realtors who take those extended holidays, but this method will save u alot of heartache.

Jessica,
Ask a friend if they know anyone they trust. Ask your mortgage broker who they trust. Get a list together from asking around, and interview them, and find one you trust most out of that group. Dont be afraid of smaller brokers, or indepenents, being a good agent has nothing to do with what company your agent works for. You knowing the agent has your best interests at heart is what make an agent good!

Jessica, If I was in your position, I would contact your local Real Estate Association, and request help in finding an ABR (Accredited Buyer's Agent) in your area. Another suggestion would be for you to contact your closest C-21 office and ask them for help regarding your plans to purchase. I am not associated with the company, but I know from experience that as a rule, they are very helpful to buyers. Good luck...
