KB Homes - Reputation ?

Asked by Tpptotal, Dublin, CA Wed Oct 19, 2011

Any idea on how is "KB Homes" as a builder in general and their after sales service. Do you have any experiences your client's have shared, where they have bought a KB Home, and are in the soup with the structure needing repairs within the 1st yr and the builder doesn't need respond or fix the issues, even though they have a 10 yr ltd. warranty attached.

Check the following link : http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/kb_home.html

Wanted your expert opinion on this. Also, do you need to have a realtor accompany if its a Brand new property ?

Having purchased and owned 3 KB homes, I'd say that build quality is generally about average and their responsiveness to warranty-covered repair is rather mediocre. For properties built in the central valley, the build quality has been hit and miss. I've had more frequent repairs to the exteriors of those units than to any other location.

And, if you're looking to purchase from KB, I always recommend you bring a Realtor to get a fair if not good deal. Looking back now, I really regret not having a Realtor look over my purchases 7-8 years ago. At the very least, I probably wouldn't have overpaid so much for some of their pricy options.

Is anyone else having severe problems with their KB Home? Since September of 2012 there have been 14 KB Homes communities in the Tampa Bay FL area that have notified local news agencies of the problems existing in their homes. Problems such as water intrusion, mold (from water intrusion), failing balconies, sinking floors, shifting columns, and the list goes on. There have been a number of local news stories and you can see evidence of problems via pictures and videos on http://TheKBHome.com

We purchased a new KB Home in Lathrop California near Stockton and Tracy. The experience has been a complete nightmare. We feel that KB Home uses deceptive marketing and misrepresented construction quality, customer satisfaction and warranty (we thought we were covered). I had seen the Businessweek article about KB Home "Rebuilding Trust" that I think someone referred to here. Reading stuff like this is what made us think that KB Home quality and service has improved from the past and maybe it was that way a few years ago but our experience has not been the case.

KB isn't my favorite builder. I'd be happy to exchange info with you verbally.

Their quality on past homes are so and so. But pricing is usually pretty good. You pay for what you get.

Happy funding, Rudi
