Most of the garbage has been going to a landfill in Waverly, Va. , and the rest is sent to landfills in Pennsylvania's Buck's County; Morrisville, Tullytown, and Falls Township.

I have attached a link so you can view the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency map of Staten Island detailing toxic waste areas. I hope this helps answer your question. Thanks. http://134.67.99.122/enviro/emef.asp

If you are still worried after all the aforementioned reassurances you can get detailed environmental information on or around any home, business or property in New York. It maps and profiles up to 19 categories of toxic sites at varying distances as far as one mile away. The full report will pinpoint many more sites than the screening maps.

How to get a Full Toxics Property Report: Toxics Targeting's reports ($150.00 each) help buyers conduct due diligence or Phase I environmental site assessments required by mortgage lenders. You can order on-line or by calling 718-715-1758. For more informations visit http://www.toxicstargeting.com

The city will also set aside $241 Million dollars to clean up the former Brookfield Landfill 130 Acres bordered by Richmond Ave, Arthur Kill Road, and LaTourette Park, and transform the area into a park. It is hoped the cleanup will begin by the end of the summer.

the Staten Island landfill closed over six years ago. Since that time, great effort has been undertaken to reclaim this area. This is much the same process that 90 other landfills across Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx underwent.

I suggest you come out to the Island now and smell the fresh air. You should also enjoy the uncrowded clean beachs and the many parks. You should check the DEP and the EPA websites about the so called toxic areas.

I have been a long time resident (25 years) and I also work on the island. Ten years ago I would tell you that the smell from Fresh Kills Landfill was putrid during hot summer days but now since the landfill has been closed and covered up the smell is now virtually gone. There has been some links to cancer near a older, smaller landfill in great kills by Arthur Kill road and Guyon Avenue, the site of illegal chemical dumping from 1977 to 1982. Otherwise the Island might have high incident of Asthma but the entire City suffers from that risk.
