HUD does have a $1 program for government agencies and non-profits. So while it is not something that is an option for a regular buyer it is something that exists and that's why you'll hear about it sometimes. http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/sfh/reo/goodn/dhmabout.cfm

They also have a 1/2 off program for some of their properties in certain areas (called revitalized areas) for teachers/officers/fire fighters/EMTs. http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/sfh/reo/goodn/gnndabot.cfm If you know of anyone who fits into that category let me know and I'd be happy to help them find a qualified HUD Realtor in their area. I've put several teachers into 1/2 price houses and it's really a great program. HUD homes are a completely different beast and making sure that you are working with someone who knows the system is a must to be successful.
