Is contiminated soil a reason to withdraw a bid on a home?

It all depends on what type of contamination you are talking about. If this is related to a buried all tank, run the cleanup can be very costly, and once you purchase the home you own the problem.

You should definitely withdraw the bid unless you are willing for the EPA to clean up the issue which could take up to a year. This is also an expensive process and you don't want to inherit future problems.

this really is a difficult issue, and depends on your definition of 'contaminated soil'....in some cases the answer is absolutely yes, but the real answer depends on you, the buyer and how much of a significance it is to you...I would recommend testing by an appropriate professional to ascertain the significance of the issue
