Is South Berkeley - near Berkeley Bowl - safe?

Asked by Utmost68, Richmond, CA Mon Aug 13, 2012

Just wondering what the pros think about the neighborhood near Berkeley Bowl. Is it safe for a family? Looking for a safe neighborhood where my kids can run around on their own. South Berkeley is pretty much the only part of Berkeley in our price range. Thanks!

I think the agents below have some great responses. I would also recommend walking the neighborhood in the day and night. Taking your kids to some of the local parks in the area, shopping and restaurants. I think that each individual has a different comfort level and getting to know the ins and outs of any neighborhood you are considering moving to would be a great idea before you buy. This is something that I recommend to all my clients who don't already know the area.

The City of Berkeley is a very diversified city. Berkeley Bowl is a well-loved grocery store not just by residents in Berkeley but all over the East Bay residents. There are great restaurants, shops, farmers market and Ashby Bart station. It is close to Emeryville, Children hospital and lower Rockridge area. You need to walk around yourself to find out if you like the neighborhood. My son owns a house nearby and we personally love the area and the diversity.

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

Overall, Realtors are prohibited by law from telling you whether or not any specific neighborhood is safe. It’s called “steering” and we are prohibited by our code of ethics and federal law from providing such information. Here are a couple posts that explain more:

Don’t Get ‘Steered’ in the Wrong Direction…

However, we CAN tell you where to go to get information. In your case, crime statistics, go to the following site:

How does "safe" fall into the restrictions on steering. It looks like steering is about race/age/income/lifestyle/etc. rather than school scores or other data. Crime rates seem like they'd fall into the school scores category, no?

I love south berkeley! The energy is awesome. Loads of diversity , New cafes new restaurants. Now there's the tuesday evening farmers market As far as safe goes , You have to decide for yourself. city of berkeley has a website that has a crime map on it. I suggest you check it out and I suggest you check out the neighborhood that you're interested in. go there different times of the day see what's going on. Pay particular attention to about 5 o'clock on a friday afternoon because that's prime dealing time. I have a house on fairview street and I love it. But keep in mind there is really no safe neighborhood anywhere.
