Asked by KS, San Ramon, CA Sun Apr 7, 2013

Planning on moving from fremont to San Ramon. My kids are currently going to private school. The neighborhood is Norris Canyon estate. The schools are Bollinger, Iron Horse and CA High. I getting torn apart whether its a right decision considering the API's are not as high as other schools in San Ramon. Any thoughts

This is the link to the state STAR testing site. Here, directly from the source, you can compare the San Ramon Valley Schools based on uniform testing.

This site has excelent infomation regarding schools, there are others that can be accessed online or though 3rd party sources but it all comes back to the state tests.

Nieghborhood schools also take on the personality of the nieghborhoods they represent. High demand schools are typically the result of active parent involvement. This sounds sill but go to the shcool in the afternoon sometime and talk to the parents directly. Most parents are more than willing to share their opinions without too much additional effort.

Bollinger Elementary is a terrific school. I know many parents with chidlren attending this school who would never want to send them anywhere else. And as Carl points out, there is a lot more to a school than just the API score. I think Bollinger will prepare children for later life as they grow up better than many with higher APIs.

They are wonderful schools. My 2 daughters graduated from Cal High.. one is at UC Berkely and the younger one is at UCLA. I think the overall API does not present the right picture. The reason being East SR/ Dougherty valley has a larger Asian population. If you look at APIs by demographics you will see that they are almost identical. I however like the fact that schools in West SR are more mixed (racially) compared to East SR (70% Asians).

APIs are not the only standard for good schools. In fact, many schools with high API scores have been accused of teaching to the test at the expense of other, more important things. Go to http://www.greatschools.net – there you will see unbiased testimonials and other information.

In my opinion, way too much credence has been given to API scores and not enough to other things that matter more. Many are choosing to live only in neighborhoods surrounding schools with top scores and ignoring many other wonderful neighborhoods. Many amazing people graduated from schools with less than stellar scores … Steve Jobs would be a great example.

The question is subjective, therefore consider a visit to the school, spaek to the superintendent, teachers, principal, etc., then determine if your comfort level can be reached; for school information see links below.
