JMom,
Please e-mail me and I will send you info on the schools in the area. We have 4 High Schools and 5 middle schools plus numerous elementary schools in Hardin County; that is not including the schools on Ft. Knox. There are also several private schools, some that go all the way through 12th grade. Choosing a school will depend on what you are looking for in that school. For instance, John Hardin High School has an excellent performing arts center, North Hardin and John Hardin have winning sports programs, Elizabethtown High is a smaller school. So as you can see, variety is available.
We have a low crime rate in our area and I would say most areas would be safe. I moved back here in 1993 so that my son could grow up in a safer area. If you want within 10 minutes of Ft. Knox, you would look in Radcliff, Vine Grove or parts of Meade county. Elizabethtown and Rineyville would be between 15 and 20 minutes to Ft. Knox.
Hope this helps, send me an e-mail and I will send you a link to school and county info.

When it comes to schools Radcliff really doesn't compete, especially at the high school level. You will have more problems (drugs, small groups of thugs - no real gangs like some major cities) with North Hardin High School in Radcliff. The newest high school is John Hardin, which is close to Elizabethtown, but also serves students that live closer to Rineyville (you would have to take a close look at the house and location for an exact determination. Elizabethtown Independent School District is small, but has good schools. These schools are more for people that live in E-Town proper (inside the city). The other area to consider is Meade County and they have pretty good schools. The towns in Meade county are not very big (Brandenburg has a population about 10,200 people), but the schools are good. We live in a gated community near Brandenburg called Doe Valley (which has a club house, pool, tennis courts, a lake, marina, couple of beaches, and a golf course. For us to get to Fort Knox the drive is 7.5 miles down to the Brandenburg Gate (north side of post). The drive from E-town to Knox can be hectic and would take at least 25 - 40 minutes depending upon the traffic (especially going to and coming from work).
