night before and that morning. During the inspection there was about 1/2 inch of water in the basement coming from the bottom of the concrete walls. The sump pump was working well, however one drain was not. There is no evidence of rust on the furnace or support poles. Is this something I should ask to be dealt with by the seller, should I accept it as just another leaky basement (the house is from 1941), or is this a very bad sign?

Hi Trev. Water in a basement is an issue that needs to be addressed by a general contractor or another professional that can determine the extent of the problem. I don't think you should just walk away without further investigation. The problem may be easy to solve or it may be more than you want to deal with but you won't know until you check it out. Your Realtor should be able to help you by giving you names of contractors in the area that have good, solid work histories. If you need further information you can certainly contact me at http://carolballrealty.com. I hope this helps you and that you will have a good result so that you can move forward to purchase this home.
Thanks!
Carol

Trev - I do not know about homes in your area, but I have always stayed away from homes that allow water in. I assume your home inspector suggested you call in an expert?
