The first thing you should do is get pre-approved. Once you know how much house you can afford, then you'll be able to dive into your search.
There are several programs available to help first time homebuyers with their closing costs and down payment. Make sure that whoever you choose to provide financing can walk you through the process, educate you about the products available and not force you into a loan that you don't understand or want.
