I am looking to retire in a less expensive city in Florida. Can anyone suggest location??

Check out Southwest Colorado! Enjoy 4 seasons. In the winter you can ski 1/2 day and then golf the other 1/2! check out http://www.durangomagazine.com, to learn more about the area. Also hiking in the desert of Utah is only 1 hr away. Great national parks in the area: Mesa Verde National Park, & Arches National Park.

The North Port and Port Charlotte area are less expensive than the city of Sarasota and surrounding areas if you are interested in the gulf side of Florida. Historically North Port in south Sarasota County and Port Charlotte in Charlotte County have always been the one of least expensive places to live in Florida and still be near Gulf beaches. While a short drive about 40 miles or so to Venice or Sarasota to the north or Ft. Myers and Cape Coral to the south is set perfectly in the middle of the larger towns and cities for a short commute to work or a large variety of entertainment venues.

In the mean time we are very much more relaxed and less hectic in North Port and Port Charlotte. But still within 20 to 30 minutes from some of the most beautiful and uncrowded beaches that Florida has to offer. And with property prices still about 10% less than the areas north and south it's a no brainer if you enjoy relaxation vs hustle and bustle.

Silver Springs just outside Ocala - and neighborring the Ocala National Forest & Silver River State Park gives you the best of all Florida has to offer. You have metro shopping in Ocala and new stores along Silver Springs Blvd. Nicely done, Beautiful clear spings and rivers all in your back yard, lakes for fishing - boating & more. Horses? One of top places in the nation. Wildlife abounds, trails for dirt bikes ATV's fun galore. Then here is the icing on the cake, who wants to live in a concrete cube in the sky? Here you can have a 1/2 acre lot - no problem. A nice 2-3 bedroom home in the 100,000 -150,000 range should meet all your must haves. Want the beach - a 45 minute drive thru Ocala National forest on hwy 40 will put you in Daytona - 2 hours to Clearwater Beach on the Gulf side. Your choice any weekend. The beach communities are at least 2x the cost, this is where the demand is. This lady wants to retire in a "Less Expensive City" - other nice retirement city options for you may be The Villages just outside Brooksville, Or Sun City south of Tampa.

Venice is a great city, still part of Sarasota County. It is quaint, safe, has Venice beach and the island is lovely. A great connecting city to downtown Sarasota and Englewood to its south. I would not go further south than Englewood. North Port property values are zero and it is causing many problems within its community. Fort Myers is also suffering with Naples still resilient.
My parents lived in Venice for 20 years and loved it.

what is less expensive mean in regards to price? are you looking to be close to the beach? then this elimanate the whole middle of the state, if you are looking for just a cheap place rto live that can be anywhere depends what your standards are. Heck i can find you a home or condo for 20,000 here in Bradenton, this does not mean will like this condo/home for 20,000
so please clarify for this state is toooooo big
Jill please be more specific, also, drive through the state, you know living in south florida is warmer than living in north florida, are you looking to get out of the cold all together, if so this eliminates jacksonville, the pan handle, etc.....

There are some great buys in the North Port and Port Charlotte areas as Bill and Deborah pointed out. I just had a customer buy a 3/2 with a pool for $71,000 that sold 2 years ago for $235,000.

Most of the properties in this price range are Forclosures and the banks require you to be pre approved for a mortgage unless you are paying cash. One of the best locations for value and opportunity is the North Port / Port Charlotte areas. This location has been hit hard by the real estate slow down after some of the fastest growth between 2003 and 2006 resulting in many nearly new homes being sold for a fraction of their real value.

We just sold a 2001 constructed home, 3/2/2, fenced yard, in move in condition foe $59,500. The buyer made a $6,000 deposit and is paying approx. $300 a month for their mortgage. There are many opportunities similar to this one.
