Like many urban neighborhoods that are transforming for the better, downtown has its pockets of quieter areas vs. more bustling areas. In my experience, the more populated areas are usually the safest, and with the influx of businesses and residents into downtown, this can mean an ever changing downtown into a more safe place. Think of cities like NYC and San Francisco where as a result of more development in an area, the safer it became, and then came schools, families, etc.

You simply need to pick an agent who is familiar with the area. All the agents at LoftLivingLA.com / Keller Williams Realty worked exclusively in Downtown Los Angeles. Anyone on our team would be able to tell you what you need to know about any of the districts in Downtown. If they don't know something, they give you a resource to figure it out. Also, the best website to check out if someone has a complaint is YELP.

Hi Navid:

You can use the websites as Sheryl suggests:
http://www.crimemapping.com
http://www.crimereports.com
http://www.everyblock.com/
http://www.localcrimenews.com
http://www.mylocalcrime.com

But more importantly, you need to be working with an experienced, licensed real estate agent who knows the area you are seeking. Another agent responded below, her name is Yuri. She is a home owner at 1100 Wilshire and would also be able to answer your questions. I've sold over 20 condos at 1100 Wilshire and can help answer your questions about the neighborhood as well.

I've lived Downtown Los Angeles for 17 years. I'm always amazed when people ask this question. Simply Google "LAPD crime map." Enter the area you are interested in. You'll notice that West Hollywood and other area report far more crimes than in the Downtown Los Angeles area. So, the facts actually show Downtown is safe. The West Side according to the LAPD crime map is dangerous.

Everything is relative. Where did you live before? What are you used to? My perception and yours could be totally different. Hang out around the area and get a feel for it. Although it sounds like you are already committed and you should have asked yourself this question sooner.

I should correct my question, I am on the verge of signing the contract.

In addition to calling the local police department go and hang out in the area at different times of the day. This is a good way to check out the neighborhood. Chat with some of the neighbors and hear what they have to say about living in the area.

Dear Navid,
The best way to find out about crime in a given neighborhood, is to contact the local police department. Realtors are prohibited by law from commenting on certain aspects of neighborhoods, so make the call and I'm sure you will get the information you are looking for.

Thanks for the info. Due to the fact that I am absolutely new in LA, is it possible to tell me about the 1111 Wilshire Building itself?
Flag Sun Jun 9, 2013
Hi Navid,

I realize you asked your question beginning of June so you've either signed a lease or found another neighborhood. If you did sign a lease, I would venture to say, you're enjoying 1111 Wilshire. It's a gorgeous building. Go up to your spectacular pool, hang out, meet your neighbors and enjoy everything DT has to offer!

Why not plan 1-3 outings to find out for yourself? If you cannot stand seeing someone drunk or sparechanging passersby, don't bother. I try to overlook them. Maybe partake in dining, shopping or visit our bookstore or adjacent CB1 Gallery? Next door visit the Greenshirts who patrol our neighborhood.

Downtown is the most dangerous part of LA, stay away!

But it's sooo scary downtown, seriously. Especially because of all the lost drivers trying to hit pedestrians. And also the homeless people, all the Westsiders tell me they're dangerous.

Not true. Simply look at the LAPD crime map.
