I am buying a house in Los Angeles and the inspector told me that it would be a good idea to have a geologist

inspect the property. He referred me to one, but he was quite expensive. Does anyone else have any ideas or referrals for the Los Angeles area? I'm buying in the 90046 area code in the hills.

Hi Ryan,
Geologists are often one of the most expensive inspections, but are also well worth the money as they could save you tens of thousands of dollars in the future. If your inspector said you should have a geologist take a look at the property there is probably a good reason why. We live in the hills in 90046- in Laurel Canyon- and sell homes there, so we know it very well. One of the most important things a geologist will tell you about is drainage. If your property does not have adequate drainage, or there is the possibility of a landslide or mudslide into your back yard these could be very expensive problems the next time there is a lot of rain. A geologist can also recommend ways to help make the drainage better, like adding drains, which you can then ask the seller to adjust the price to account for. Definitely ask for a few referrals, and ask your inspector why he thinks you need a geological inspection. You really don't want to find out the hard way that this is something you should have done! It's something that you can possibly get away with skipping in the flats, but we would not advise it in the hills.

Hi Ryan,

I have a master degree in geology. What is the reason the inspector likes you to hire a geologist? My number is (949)637-3845.

Sincerely

Homa

Ask your realtor for other referrals if this one is too expensive. This is one of the more important things to inspect in the hills so I wouldn't recommend skipping it or going with the least expensive guy. Find someone highly recommended and get it taken care of. Better to pay a bit more and know something very important than pay less and miss a large flaw.
