How to "freeze my property taxes since my husband is retired and disabled?

Asked by Over Taxed, San Antonio, TX Fri Apr 23, 2010

I bought my home in 2001 in Bexar county. I got married in 2003. My husband is retired and fully disabled - I would like to get a break from the rising property tax and have him on the title or deed with me. How do I add him and what do I have to do to get the taxes "froozen"?

Go to the Bexar County Appraisal District website - http://www.bcad.org
Or call them as there is paperwork involved. Is your husband over 65? Do you have the homestead exemption for your home? They can help you file to get the tax break you deserve.
To get him on the title you need to call your mortgage company. If you have no mortgage, call a real estate attorney and they can provide the proper paperwork.

Many places have a senior freeze that will help keep taxes down. There are certain qualifications you must meet and in many places needs to be renewed each year.

You will need to contact the tax assessors office for your area and find out what the requirements are.
