How to purchase a foreclosure home thats past the short sale point in the process but has not went to auction?

I've found a home that I am very interested in purchasing that is going through foreclosure. The previous owner filed for Bankruptcy in January 2009 and per his lawyer it was finalized in May 2009. Meaning it is past the short sale point in the process? The mortgage is through Bank of America/Countrywide but the people I've talked with can not tell me what the next step should be. I've been watching the local sheriff auction site but it only post 30 days at a time and the home I'm interested in has not posted yet. Is there a way of finding out if this home will be auctioned and when? Also, is there a way of bypassing these steps and talk with someone concerning making an offer on the home?

You can approach the bank about a "short sale" up to the foreclosure auction (at least in the State of Maine.)
